Paul Stonehill says medieval European archives preserve treaties with small people who lived in caves. He reads a 1190 Bavarian pact of Duke Bertold IV granting them market rights in exchange for silver and help digging passages, a 1248 monastic account of child-sized traders who brought native silver by moonlight, and a 1273 royal charter protecting the little mountain people in return for silver for coinage. He also points to a recent Saxony-Anhalt dig that uncovered a medieval earth tunnel, and retells the 12th-century story of the green children of Woolpit.
