Bio
Michael Levine is the author of NY Times non-fiction best-seller DEEP COVER, and FIGHT BACK (How to Take Your Own Community Back From The Drug Dealers) and was also the subject of Donald Goddard's biography UNDERCOVER. He is co-author (with Laura Kavanau) of THE BIG WHITE LIE ("La Guerra Falsa") and TRIANGLE OF DEATH. Today, Mr. Levine's books continue to acquire sterling reviews and international recognition.
Mr. Levine is one of the most highly decorated DEA agents in that agency's history.
He was charged with design and orchestration of some of the government's most significant national and international Deep Cover and conspiracy investigations. Mr. Levine held multiple positions in the DEA, including Group Supervisor in the New York City Field Division, Special Operations Officer worldwide and Country Attaché to Argentina and Uruguay.
Since 1973, Mr. Levine has taught narcotics investigative procedures throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and South America, including but not limited to lecturing for the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York State Police, Ontario Provincial Police College, Canadian Mounted Police, The US State Department, the NYPD, Australian Police and numerous other police agencies.
In 2009 he authored the student manual "Undercover Tactics and Informant handling" for the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services. In 2011, he authored a translated version of this manual for the U.S. State Department. In addition, Mr. Levine is currently working for the U.S. State Department, lecturing the Brazilian Federal Police on Undercover Tactics and Informant Handling.
Since 1990, Mr. Levine has worked as a trial consultant and expert witness. He has reviewed and commented upon in excess of 300 full case files, relating to both civil and criminal matters. His areas of expertise include Covert Operations, International Narcotics Trafficking, Informant Handling, Police Use-of-Force, Blind Mule Defense and more. Mr. Levine's work involves lengthy reviews of the investigative and law enforcement practices of many agencies, including but not limited to: FBI, DEA, Customs, Homeland Security, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and more than 30 local, state and city police agencies throughout the U.S.
Mr. Levine has served as a media law enforcement consultant for top national TV and radio shows including 60 Minutes, McNeil Lehrer News Hour and Frontline.
Mr. Levine has also been retained as a technical consultant for multiple television series, and has appeared as an expert on various law enforcement related topics for numerous local television shows around the country. Chronic electrical surges at the massive new data-storage facility central to the National Security Agency's spying operation have destroyed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of machinery and delayed the center's opening for a year, according to project documents and current and former officials.
There have been 10 meltdowns in the past 13 months that have prevented the NSA from using computers at its new Utah data-storage center, slated to be the spy agency's largest, according to project documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
One project official described the electrical troubles—so-called arc fault failures—as "a flash of lightning inside a 2-foot box." These failures create fiery explosions, melt metal and cause circuits to fail, the official said.
The causes remain under investigation, and there is disagreement whether proposed fixes will work, according to officials and project documents. One Utah project official said the NSA planned this week to turn on some of its computers there.
NSA spokeswoman Vanee Vines acknowledged problems but said "the failures that occurred during testing have been mitigated. A project of this magnitude requires stringent management, oversight, and testing before the government accepts any building." Read more at: The Wall Street Journal

Lavabit owner Ladar Levison closed his encrypted email company after refusing to comply with a government effort to tap his customers' information. It is now been confirmed the FBI was targeting National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, who used Lavabit's services. But Levison says that instead of just targeting Snowden, the government effectively wanted access to the accounts of 400,000 other Lavabit customers.
Levison now says that since first going public, he has been summoned before a grand jury, fined $10,000 for handing over encryption keys on paper instead of digitally, and threatened with arrest for speaking out. The Justice Department began targeting Labavit the day after Snowden revealed himself as the source of the NSA leaks. October 4, 2013–Tjeerd Andringa is an associate professor of Sensory Cognition at the ALICE Institute at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. He recently wrote a fascinating paper that provides an in-depth analysis of bureaucracy as a psychological phenomenon. The paper also lists key-features and indicators of encroaching government administration that creates virtual iron cages with papers, rules, forms and protocols.
Andringa details the driving forces of bureaucracy from the perspective of cognitive science. He explains that the authoritarian's fear of a complex world is existential, so the technocrat in charge of government or other organizations is quite ruthless in the efforts to simplify the working environment(the real world), in order to try to understand it better. He says that fear is at the root of the problem. In the second hour, we discuss further how bureaucracy applies to both conspiracies and geopolitics. We discuss how behavior drives decisions that can be categorized either as authoritarian or libertarian. A clear distinction is made between authoritarians, who favor more bureaucracy vs. libertarians, who favor no bureaucracy at all. Later, Tjeerd says that bureaucracies always arise under authoritarian control. Authoritarians crave a clear chain of command. As the federal government shutdown continues, Secretary of State John Kerry heads to Asia for secret talks on a sweeping new trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP is often referred to by critics as "NAFTA on steroids," and would establishing a free-trade zone that would stretch from Vietnam to Chile, encompass 800 million people -- about a third of world trade and nearly 40 percent of the global economy. While the text of the treaty has been largely negotiated behind closed doors and until June, kept secret from Congress, more than 600 corporate advisors reportedly have access to the measure, including employees of Halliburton, and Monsanto.
"This is not mainly about trade," says Lori Wallach, director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch. "It is a corporate trojan horse. The agreement has 29 chapters, and only five of them have to do with trade. The other 24 chapters either handcuff our domestic governments -- limiting food safety, environmental standards, financial regulation, energy and climate policy -- or establishing new powers for corporations." -democracynow.org
