Use of codon optimization virtually guarantees unexpected results Replacing rare codons must be done judiciously, as rarer codons can have slower translation rates and a slowed-down rate is actually necessary to prevent protein misfolding Stop codons, when present at the end of an mRNA coding sequence, signals the termination of protein synthesis.
