Professor Seyed Mohammed Marandi tells Jamarl Thomas that Iran went on full alert after judging a US attack was coming, and that the chance of renewed war is high. Trump’s threats to wipe Iran out, he says, no longer change Iranian planning. He doubts the United States would arrest Araghchi or Pezeshkian during a visit, but says Iran would answer militarily if it tried.
He then sets out five scenarios. All-out strikes on Iranian infrastructure would be met by the destruction of Israeli and Persian Gulf infrastructure, the collapse of those states, and a global depression with oil and gas cut off for years.
A limited campaign against bases and missiles would fail, he says, because the important assets are underground or hidden among decoys, and Iran would shut the Strait of Hormuz, which is only partly open with Iranian consent.
Continuing the present policy still drives the US and world economy downhill, only more slowly. Declaring victory and walking away would not normalize the strait until Iran’s demands are met. The only route he accepts is for Washington to carry out the commitments Trump signed in the memorandum.
Iran is shifting to a wartime economy and is prepared for a fight that could last until the next US president, though Marandi doubts the American economy can last that long. He says Iran is militarily stronger than six months ago, and that a US strike on Ansar Allah would bring an Iranian response.
