Jeremy Scahill on "Dirty Wars" and U.S. National Security: VICE Podcast 009

The VICE Podcast is a weekly unedited discussion which delves inside the minds of some of the most interesting, creative, and bizarre people we know within the VICE universe. This week, we speak with Jeremy Scahill, national security correspondent for "The Nation," whose work covering America's special operations [forces] and targeted killings in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia is chronicled in the recently released documentary, "Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield." As the U.S. continues to expand its use of covert counterterrorism measures worldwide, Scahill argues that far from making Americans safer, U.S. covert counterterrorism measures are in fact undermining national security.

The Untold Story of War: U.S. Veterans Face Staggering Epidemic of Unemployment, Trauma & Suicide, November 11, 2013

Source: democracynow.org

Today marks Veterans Day, the federal holiday honoring U.S. men and women who have fought in the armed forces. Veterans continue to face extremely high levels of unemployment, traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress and homelessness. Since 2000, nearly 6,000 service members have experienced traumatic amputations from injuries caused by improvised explosive devices and other war-related dangers. Nearly one million active service members have been diagnosed with at least one mental health disorder since 2000; nearly half of those have been diagnosed with two or more. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 22 veterans take their own lives each day.

Last year, more U.S. military personnel died by their own hands than the hands of others. On any given night, nearly 63,000 veterans are homeless. Many suffer chronic debilitating mental health problems. We are joined by long-time writer and photographer Ann Jones, author of the new book, "They Were Soldiers: How the Wounded Return from America's Wars — The Untold Story."

Glenn Greenwald | U.S. Spying on Allies Shows "Institutional Obsession" With Surveillance, October 28, 2013

The spat over U.S. spying on Germany grew over the weekend following reports the National Security Agency has monitored the phone calls of Chancellor Angela Merkel since as early as 2002, before she even came to office.

The NSA also spied on Merkel's predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder, after he refused to support the Iraq war. NSA staffers working out of the U.S. embassy in Berlin reportedly sent their findings directly to the White House. The German tabloid Bild also reports President Obama was made aware of Merkel's phone tap in 2010, contradicting his apparent claim to her last week that he would have stopped the spying had he known.

In another new disclosure, the Spanish newspaper El Mundo reports today the NSA tracked some 60 million calls in Spain over the course of a month last year. A delegation of German and French lawmakers are now in Washington to press for answers on the allegations of U.S. spying in their home countries. We discuss the latest revelations with Glenn Greenwald, the journalist who first reported Edward Snowden's leaks. -democracynow.org
