February 14, 2012–Very few people live at the intersection of so much change, creativity, and controversy as Birgitta Jónsdóttir. A political activist for many important issues, including the war in Iraq, new media regulation paradigms, and internet freedom and privacy, she became an Icelandic parliament member for the Civic Movement, a political movement for democratic reform, following Iceland’s banking collapse in 2008. In 2010, Birgitta co-produced the video Collateral Murder for Wikileaks, serving briefly as their spokesperson, and was subsequently targeted as a national security concern by the Department of Justice. She was also the chief sponsor of the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative, a unanimously approved set of new laws designed to ensure total press freedom.
As countries around the world struggle to cope with global systemic transition, Iceland is a beacon of hope for enlightened governance. Join us with Birgitta Jónsdóttir for an in-depth discussion of internet privacy, freedom of speech, and the opportunities before Iceland today.
