Cyclonic storm Phailin, the strongest to hit India in more than a decade and classified as "very severe" so far, is about 20 kilometres away from Gopalpur in Odisha. It is expected to hit parts of the state and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh before 8 this evening, prompting the country's biggest evacuation in 23 years. -NDTV

Cyclone Phailin Batters India's East Coast Nearly 12 million people are in the path of the cyclone which is expected to be the fiercest storm to hit India in 14 years. A powerful cyclone has torn into India's east coast, killing at least five people and forcing more than half a million into shelters.

Cyclone Phailin was expected to remain a "very severe cyclonic storm", with winds up to 130mph, into the early hours of Sunday as it moves inland in the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

Up to 12 million people could be affected by heavy rain and strong winds, according to disaster management officials.
