A 6 year-old boy from Florida born with right arm deficiency has received a prosthetic replacement. Now climbing a tree and catching a ball will be easier for him. Students from Florida University made it on a 3D printer for just $350 in just 8 weeks.
Help for little Alex Pring, missing his right arm from just above the elbow, came from students at the University of Central Florida. An engineering doctoral student, Albert Manero, heard about the boy’s needs and decided to recruit a team of students to create a solution for the boy.
“I mean, I’m me. So I don’t have an arm,” little Alex said. “I still try real hard to do things like other kids using what I’ve got. But it’s getting harder the more I grow,” according to the official website of University of Central Florida.
The arm and part of the hand were made on a 3D printer. They run with off-the-shelf servos and batteries that are activated by the electromyography muscle energy in Alex’s bicep.
Alex’s new limb only cost $350 to build. In comparison, prosthetic arms for children cost much more – about $40,000 - and they have to be replaced often as children grow.
Also prosthetics for kids are more difficult to make than for adults because the components are much smaller, according to Manero. When Alex gets too big for his new limb, new parts will be printed and they will also be cheap– only $20 for a new hand, and around $40 to $50 for a replacement forearm.
"I hope that people look at these other arms that cost $40,000," Manero said. "If we can do this for just $350 in 8 weeks, I'm sure we're going to keep pioneering."
The arm was delivered to Alex on Friday. He practiced his new limb on a toy duck. He managed to grip the toy and squeeze it with his new hand. Then he rushed to his mother to hug her with both hands –for the first time in his life.
“When he hugged me with two hands, he just didn’t let go,” said Alyson Pring, Alex’s mother. “It was amazing. I think it will help his confidence, so he can see future possibilities and make them seem all the more reachable for him.”
Manero, who has a master’s degree from UCF in aerospace engineering and is writing his Ph.D., said he believes the team’s design could help many similarly affected children.
“My mother taught us that we’re supposed to help change the world,” said Manero. “We’re supposed to help make it better. That’s why we did it. The look on Alex’s face when he used it for the first time was priceless.”
And the enthusiastic team doesn’t want to stop at Alex - they have decided to help all children with such problems.
“We’ve already heard from another family who needs an arm. We’re committed to helping who we can.”
“I think 3-D printing is revolutionizing our world in many ways. I believe changing the world of prosthetics is very real. There’s no reason why this approach shouldn’t work on adults too.”

The United States military is developing a mini-surveillance drone that would fit into soldiers’ pockets, with special features for dangerous combat zones.
The US Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC) in Massachusetts is behind the new technology research.
The mini-drone is called the 'Cargo Pocket ISR' and includes features such as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
It looks like a toy palm-sized helicopter and weighs only 16 grams. But despite its miniature physical characteristics, the mini-drone will be capable of performing serious tasks.
The technology used by the Americans will borrow heavily from existing capabilities seen in pocket surveillance drones already in use by British troops in places like Afghanistan.
“Prox Dynamics' PD-100 Black Hornet, a palm-sized miniature helicopter weighing only 16 grams, has the ability to fly up to 20 minutes while providing real-time video via a digital data link from one of the three embedded cameras and operates remotely with GPS navigation,” the description of the British drone reads in the Army’s official press release published this week.
The best advantage is that due to its tiny propellers and motors, the device will be virtually undetectable to subjects under surveillance, the official press release said.
The goal is to provide soldiers with similar, but more short-distance reconnaissance capabilities that larger unmanned aerial vehicles have. After the work is done, the little machine will also be able to fly in low-light, as well as indoors.
Although combining the high-tech surveillance approach with a pocket-sized drone is a project still somewhat in its infancy for the US military, there are other squad-level surveillance devices already in use; the army tested hi-tech throwable cameras back in 2011.
Acting NSRDEC technical director Dr. Laurel Allender praised the new technology. “The Cargo Pocket ISR is a true example of an applied systems approach for developing new soldier capabilities. It provides an integrated capability for the soldier and small unit for increased situational awareness and understanding with negligible impact on soldier load and agility,” she said.
After the development stage is complete, the mini-drone will have to comply with the Army’s digital security standards.

The tense situation between Ukraine and the United States is outlined in a paper released earlier this month by the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISS). A week prior to the downing of Malaysian flight 17, the institute warned that the west “refuses to adhere to the principles and norms of international law and the rules and spirit of the existing system of international relations.”
Much like the United States Army War College Strategic Studies Institute, RISS provides “…information support to the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, the Federation Council, the State Duma and the Security Council as well as to Government offices, ministries and departments”.
The July 9th paper warns that the United States and NATO are attempting to create a “new world order” out of the Ukrainian situation that will impose totalitarian global laws and regulations. The basis of this system, warns RISS, will be a “single system to issue money”. The authors state that because this system will meet resistance, the threat of war needs to be maintained.
Ukraine, the authors write, is a testing ground for the establishment and its drive for world government. As the IMF and the global elite take over Ukraine.
“It seems that in addition to specific operational objectives, setting a formal and informal foreign control of key functions of the Ukrainian authorities may have the task of testing technologies… and disappearance of the sovereignty of independent States.”
The fact that this information is coming from an obviously pro-Russian perspective does not detract from the fact that this agenda has been well documented and observed for decades by researchers across the globe.

In the United States, a secret grand jury is investigating WikiLeaks for its role in publishing a trove of leaked documents about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as classified State Department cables. In Sweden, Assange is wanted for questioning on allegations of sexual misconduct though no charges have been filed. Late last week, there was the first break in the latter case in two years, when a Swedish court announced it would hold a hearing on July 16 about a request by his lawyers for prosecutors to hand over new evidence and withdraw the arrest warrant. In the first of a two-part interview, Assange discusses his new legal bid in Sweden, the ongoing grand jury probe in the United States, and WikiLeaks' efforts to assist National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden.

This interview with James was requested by a friend who very sadly and recently lost their 25 year old son who died in his sleep unexpectedly. All of us lose someone close to us throughout our lives, death being the only inevitability here. One of the most unanswered questions we all have is what happens after death. As such my friends requested that I asked James for an explanation. The following interview is a private conversation that I had with James where he kindly discussed how after passing on the mind and soul combine to become spirit. Energy is eternal, it cannot be destroyed. We who survive remember our loved ones with fondness, this interview is for my friends and for those who are ill and facing an uncertain time.
Later in the interview the conversation, as always with James, comes around to more pressing issues that need to be discussed. For if we do not fix what is wrong here, what is being done not only to the human race but also to the planet, then we will not have a home to live upon and non-of us will survive. -Torz Baron Copley

In March 2011, an earthquake and tsunami devastated the eastern coast of Japan. Thousands of people were killed, and scores more were displaced as a result of the natural disaster. Radioactive material leaked into the Pacific Ocean, and the area surrounding the plant became irradiated. This led to the development of an exclusion zone around the plant, and the evacuation of cities near the stricken nuclear site.
But more than three years after the event, journalists still struggle to report on what exactly is going on with the region’s recovery and cleanup efforts. TEPCO, the utility that managed the nuclear reactor, has been criticized for not being forthcoming with the public, or with the victims of the tragedy … or, even with the government. Today on Global Journalist, we take a look at what’s going on in Fukushima, and look at some of the challenges reporters face in covering stories like these in Japan.

The ruling allows the NSA to conduct surveillance on 193 countries around the world. Only four countries in the world are excluded from the ruling: Canada, Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand. In the 80's, he also became fascinated with the scientific ideas of chaos theory, so he founded Strange Attractions, a shop dedicated to chaos theory. He returns to discuss his latest work, The State is Out of Date: We Can Do Better.
