Paul Stonehill traces serpent legends around the Khanate of Kazan, the Tatar successor of the Golden Horde that ruled from about 1438 until Ivan the Terrible took the city in 1552.

He reads from the medieval Legend of the Kingdom of Kazan: the future capital sat on a nest of snakes, including a huge two-headed serpent. A magician is said to have gathered and burned them so King Saiin could found the city.

The same winged serpent lives on as Zilant, Kazan's coat of arms. Stonehill follows later folklore — a flying serpent over the Volga, an 1816 clergyman's diary, and ash layers on Zilant Mountain — and asks how much of the story is swamp vipers, how much is myth, and what archaeology might still show.
